Have you heard? There are some Wild things happening at the Dighton Public Library this summer! The library is hosting a variety of programs and activities all summer, starting June 30. Wild Reads, the statewide animal themed reading program, encourages children to read during the summer. Research shows that students who do not continue to read during the summer actually lose reading abilities they worked so hard to acquire during the school year. Students are also not as successful when returning to school in the fall. Increased reading, whether for information or enjoyment, is linked to higher achievement in all school subject areas.
New this summer at the Dighton Public Library is an online reading journal for children of all ages to track their reading time – and prizes earned. The online system allows kids to log in their reading time; write reviews of their books; and keep track of special events at the library this summer. Access to the online journal is free and available on the Dighton Public Library website, http://www.dightonlibrary.org//. The summer reading program is a safe online environment, open only to summer reading participants, and actively monitored by library staff. No personal or identifying information will be collected or published on this site. While we encourage all children to participate online, paper reading logs will still be available.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
See you this summer!
Sincerely,
Lorie Van Hook
